Switch 2 with DLSS? Nintendo’s New Patent: Using AI to Enhance Game Resolution

Nintendo’s upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, is set to reveal more details about its games and hardware on April 2. Recently, gaming insiders discovered that a new Nintendo patent mentions using AI neural networks to upscale game resolution, sparking speculation that this technology will be implemented in Switch 2.
According to findings by gaming insider @MikeOdysseyYT, Nintendo’s latest patent explains how hardware generates a lower-resolution 540p game image. This output is then fed into a trained neural network system, which processes the data and reconstructs it into a higher-resolution 1080p image. The overall technique resembles DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution), which are widely used for super-resolution upscaling in gaming.
This has led to widespread discussion among fans. If the Switch 2 could truly upscale games from 540p to 1080p, it would be highly impressive, especially in handheld mode. However, some speculate that the patent’s claims might be aspirational, and a more realistic improvement might be from 540p to 720p. Whether this technology will actually debut in the Switch 2 remains to be seen, but with less than two weeks until the official reveal, answers are coming soon.
